Take Flight with the Inglesina Avio

In Italian, "Avio"means "Aviation". So what better place for to take the Avio on her maiden run than the Airport?

The slogan is "Fly the City", which means the Avio can be used all over town, in all different situations. See how the canopy pulls all the way down past the napper bar.

Because it designed for maximum urban versatility, the Avio has a single bar handle, so you can "fly it" one-handed.

If you don't need to pull the canopy all the way down, the pop out visor still provides plenty of coverage.

The Avio is an original design from Inglesina--the first new model in a long time. As you might expect with an Italian-made product, it is understated in it's elegance and simplicity.

In a way, it is like the next generation Zippy. Smaller, lighter, narrower, and more compact.

But it is more. The Tomasi brothers and their team of designers set out to make the stroller as modern and refined as possible, by eliminating all visible signs of joints and hinges.

 And no gloppy welds here!

The seat full reclines, and is a generous size. And you can get a carrycot for it, as an optional accessory.

Love the leather-like accents! The navy blue and grey are so classy together.

The ball bearings on the wheels allow the Avio to glide over woodchips and grass. It turned in a stellar performance on the Strollerqueen Obstacle Course.

Check out the cool fold! The single bar handle is jointed, which allows it to fold umbrella style!

The fold is about the easiest out there, on par with Baby Jogger. And in case you forget how...

There's even a reminder on how to use the brakes, haha!

These wheels are so pretty, they deserve their one close-up! They're a nice hard rubber, which you don't see many of these days.

And if God is in the details...look at the "A's" on the canopy window!

 And on the harness straps.

Look at the fit and finish. Italian all the way.

The sky was becoming foreboding...a storm was bearing down...

But no need to beat a hasty retreat or stop the fun...just open the little magic bag that comes with the Avio, and pop out the raincover!

The Avio is not only about form, but it is also about function. It is so easy to steer one-handed with a heavier child. It is a fun stroller to push. The suspension is perfect; and allows the wheels to bounce over cracks and ruts and grass. Almost as bouncy as this airplane toy!

The Avio basket holds plenty, like a purse, diaper bag, superman lunchbox...

And yes, there is a cup holder, which doesn't detract from the swooping angles...

The sky is getting darker..

But there are still airplanes to fly...

The Avio stands by, waiting for it's pilot...

 It won't be long now.

Uh oh! The pine tree grabs the glider!

And so we fly, away in our Avio.

Here's a video of how Luca and Ivan Tomasi designed the Avio:

Maxi Cosi Foray LX Review

Foray Fireworks!

Let's say you're really lusting after a high-quality reversible stroller. But you can't, or won't pay nearly 4 figures, or more.

Before now, your only choice was to scout for bargains. Not easy, since most higher-end brands are exempt from sales.

You could also look for used. But then you are risking getting something dirty or broken. And, you tank your warranty.

What to do, what to do.....

BANG! It's the new Maxi Cosi Foray LX to the rescue!!!!

I am so impressed with this, I can't tell you. When I saw it at the "2011 BIG Stroller Roll-Out!" I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

     Picture

I LOVE the 12" rear air tires, gives it a simply fantastic ride. Really comparable to the higher end models. Just glides, one-handed.

The front wheels even have a wicked suspension!

The seat is really a generous size, which isn't as common as you might think. In general, reversible strollers have pretty small seats; and many children outgrow them by 18 months, two years old. The Maxi Cosi Foray LX is going to last you much longer.

It doesn't come with a bassinette, but that makes it a really good choice if your baby is out of the newborn stage. Why pay for the bassinette, if you don't need it?

The latest model is much easier to fold than prior models, and it will fold with the seat on! It also stands folded.

The seat pops off really easily, too, if you prefer to fold it in two pieces. Splitting the weight into two pieces is great if you've had a C-section, or can't lift much for some other reason.

It's also nice because it is so quick to change directions on the seat. And the seat sits pretty high up from the ground; always a great feature.

The basket is bigger than in prior models. And, check out how ingenious it is. So easy to access from the front, and you can velcro it closed. Why don't more strollers have this?

The handle slides out to 44", so it's great for a taller person. But the bottom height is 39", so it's fine for someone shorter as well.

The brakes are literally one-step, the easiest out there. Totally flip flop friendly. Just step on that white center button to put the brake on, step on it again to release it. And notice how the back of the basket closes with a drawstring.

The napper bar easily opens up and pivots out, or comes off completely. Makes it very easy to get your child in and out of the seat, or for your child to climb in him/herself, when they are older.

The Foray LX does fully recline. But, because it's more of a "bucket" type seat, though, it isn't suitable for a very young baby. There is too much of a "dip" in the center. I have an old English pram that has what they call "a newborn wedge" just for this reason. You insert it in the dip, then the seat is flat.

Most people just use their car seats now, although I am not a huge fan of sticking car seats in strollers. But this is compatible with the Maxi Cosi Mico car seat.

The large canopy has three panels, and the side windows are UV protected. Great to protect your baby from strong rays.

And don't worry if it rains, because it comes with a rain cover!

And you know what else it comes with, one of the biggest Q's we always get in Strollerland--it's own cup holder, whoo hoo!

CYBEX ONYX

"Cybex in the Rain"

Lately, we have been having winter, spring, summer, and fall--all in the same week.  Saturday it was spring, and I went to the beach. Sunday it was fall, and I went to a festival. But I was really looking forward to Monday, and winter.  That was because I was so excited to try out my new Cybex Onyx  with rain cover, and My Blue Bumbershoot stroller umbrella!

Readers of the 2011 "BIG Stroller Roll-Out" know how thrilled I was when I first saw the Bumbershoot. That is because I love to stroll, but I hate to get wet. And this year, we've had more rain than we've had in like 10,000 years or something. Really cut into my stroller time. But if I had the Bumbershoot, I wouldn't mind. FINALLY it arrived, yippee! Couldn't wait for those storm clouds to build. The day got greyer and greyer, and then the raindrops started.

It all started out so promising. Attached the clamp and the umbrella to the Onyx. SP 2.0 was excited to ride in his new black and red "firetruck" (Lipstick Onyx.) He insisted that he wear his firehat and firejacket. And so, off we went.

But by the time we crossed the street, the umbrella suddenly closed.

I reached up to open it again, but it was collapsed. That is when I realized that the center post had snapped.

  Right in half.

Oh well, that's what happens with first-run products. I was just grateful that the umbrella still kept me dry, despite having broken.

The owners of the company were so lovely. Very apologetic. Sent me out a brand new one straight away. Now for the next rainy day....

The Cybex Onyx canopy is pretty great, even if you don't use the raincover. You can unzip it for more coverage, and it's just huge. Plus, it has a 50 UV protection, for when the rain stops.

AND--you can slide the canopy up and down the frame, so you have enough headroom for the tallest child, or proper sun coverage for the smallest. Brilliant! Now why doesn't everyone do that?

Note the handsome black frame; contrasts beautifully with the red fabric. The Onyx has a 4-position recline, extended legrest, and ergo foam handles. Oh, and did I mention you can get a cupholder? It's a good one, and it actually fits! Oh, yeah!

The quick umbrella fold and carry strap makes the Onyx a no-brainer for your vacation travels.

Btw, the chunky rear wheels have suspension, and they are 5.5" in diameter.

Oh, and don't forget to get that raincover, in case you encounter summer, spring, fall, or winter showers!

BABY JOGGER CITY SELECT

A diamond for Mother's Day

Ever since CEO Dave Boardman acquired Baby Jogger, he's made it his mission to make life as fun and easy for parents as possible. Well that, and to sell as many strollers as possible, lol! But if you master the former, then you will accomplish the latter.  As proof, the City Select is back-ordered everywhere!

It's the latest addition to Baby Jogger's "fun and easy" line-up of strollers.

Fun, because you can use it as a single or double. And you can adjust the bassinet or seats in numerous different configurations.

Both seats facing each other:

 Both seats facing you:

Both seats facing out:

One seat facing in, the other seat facing out. And so on.

It is also fun to have a tandem. Getting stuck in and aisle or doorway is no fun. Gliding through a crowded nursery without knocking over a potted plant is:

Also no fun is having the sun glare directly in your eyes. With the BJ trademark huge canopies, no worries there!

As on other BJ models, the fold is easy. If you forget how to do it, just read.

Popping off the seat to change directions is as simple as pushing this button:

Same with the tires. You can pop them off for a more compact fold by pushing in this lever:

The basket zippers open for easier access. And boy, is it big!

The peekaboo window on the top has a flap that closes with a magnet. This feature--magnetic instead of velcro or tie closure--is turning out to be surprisingly popular.

And I don't think I have seen a harness this easy to adjust. Take a look:

And when it's time for a snooze, just pull the recline lever in the back:

My "Diamond" is stunning, and practical. A rare gem in the double stroller world. Can't think of anything I would rather have for Mother's Day. Hope that everyone in Strollerland was richly rewarded, because you're worth a million bucks. Happy Mother's Day!

Bumbleride Bunny

The Bumbleride Indie in Spice, with it's gorgeous color combo of orange and blue, just screams Easter! My only trepidation about taking it out of town was the fact that it is a 3-wheeler. Could it fit it in the car with all of our luggage and Easter baskets?

Oh yeah, no problem! This is the most compact folding true A/T stroller I have seen!

(Check out all of my measurements below. And if you want it even smaller, just pop off the rear wheels. ) Which is a good thing to know, since summer vacation is right around the corner. And not all of our adventures take place on paved roads. When I am traveling, these are some features in a stroller that I wish for.

Another very good thing to have when traveling is a big basket and carry handle--check.

And a huge canopy, to protect against sun rays, and summer showers. Could it get any bigger than this?

A napper bar is great to hang toys on, or snack trays. Check. An adjustable leg rest? Check. SP 2.0  is much more comfy when he has his feet up. And when baby is rested and happy, we are all rested and happy.

A mesh vent in the hood would be nice...check...

And perhaps a zipper in the back of the canopy for more ventilation, and a zippered pocket...

And of course, for great maneuverability over those cobblestones, rutted roads, and trails, air tires with suspension and a front swivel wheel are a must-have:

An extra bonus would be a recline and harness that are easy to use, check:

And a height adjustable handle, if one pusher is tall, and the other is short:

Stylish fabrics that are easy to clean would be lovely.

Finally, it would be nice if it came with a rain cover. Check. And if you could get a matching foot muff, diaper bag, snack tray, bassinet, and travel  bag. Double check. I would like it to have a flat recline for napping or a newborn, a large seat for bigger children, and the choice of a single or double, in lots of bright colors. Triple check.

This is the stuff stroller dreams are made of. And our dreams have come true, in the Indie. Thank you, Bumbleride, for being the "Stroller Genie" and granting our wishes.

UPPA BABY VISTA

If you've been trying to get your hands on the 2010 UPPAbaby Vista with Rumble seat, you know it's sold out most everywhere. And it's not just because owners Bob and Lauren Monahan have the "Luck o' the Irish" on their side. It's because this is as near perfect of a double stroller as you can get.

Which is a good thing, because St. Patrick's Day has always been as near perfect of a holiday for us as you can get. The only thing that would make it better would be if I had a baby born on that day. And I did. Last year, he modeled two strollers for this special day. This year, as he turns 2, it's one stroller with two seats. But if he didn't have his little friend Morgan with him, it could still be one stroller.

That is because, the Vista has the distinct advantage of being the rare breed that can go from single to double, and actually triple, if you get their "PiggyBACK" riding board. Maybe next year, when he turns 3, we can add another little friend to the mix--3 for 3, haha!

I last reviewed the Vista when it first came out. That was four years ago. So I can see how it has evolved since the beginning, and I find all these improvements and options to the 2010 rather extraordinary. I am going to get into them in more details, but here is a quick view of the new changes:

All these improvements means it's more costly, but really, for once I think the price hike is worth it! I mean, how many strollers can be used for one, two, or three children? That makes it actually, a pretty good investment. Even though I currently have only one main stroller rider, my house is always full of children. And they always want to go somewhere. So it is nice to have the extra seat, or riding board, on hand.

The 2010 Vista has corrected nearly every little "bugaboo" that bothered parents. Credit Bob and Lauren for their excellent listening skills, and responsive abilities. Super Powers, mon! Shouldn't be this rare, but it is. Let's start by taking a look at the Rumble seat.

Unlike other models with add-on seats, you can actually get this one off in under 10 minutes. Under 10 seconds, actually. Can't tell you how much that is appreciated, since I have spend more time than I can count standing by an open car with screwdrivers and butter knives and the kindness of strangers tugging and yanking on seats that won't budge, and hence won't fold.

Then there is the "feet in the basket" issue, which always bugged me about Brand X. There went all of my storage space. BUT, UPPA has had the foresight of including a clip on footrest, which means you can still stick stuff underneath, and little feet aren't dangling. (The basket is gigantic anyway, so you still have loads of room.) Like the seat itself, it is feather light, and a snap to attach.

And look at the size of this Rumble seat. It is huge! (Check out the measurements below.) It is bigger than most regular stroller seats! Which means you will have a lot of growing room for your older child. AND, ta da! It has it's own CANOPY! Yes indeed, no more sacrificing one child to sunburn! What a concept, whoo hoo! And look how much space there is between the two seats! Plenty of room for a view, if there are no balloons or hats, that is!

But how does it push with the second seat and second rider? Well, Morgan's mom was shocked. I think "Wow" came out of her mouth a few times. And she is the original Bugaboo Bee queen, so she knows good maneuverability when she sees it, or steers it. I have to say, it *is* pretty great. The foam tires aren't *quite* as A/T as air tires. But that also means less weight, and no flats. And they have suspension, so that helps. UPPA used to sell the fatter, more A/T tires separately; not sure if they still do.

The main seat can sit very upright, and it has a napper bar for your little one to hang on to. It also has the amazing sun canopy with pull down UV visor and zip-in bug net. Oh, and for you strollin' die-hards, it comes with a raincover. But one feature that makes this an awesomely comfortable stroller is the way you can adjust the footrest up. Check this out:

Doesn't that make YOU wish you had a seat like this? SP 2.0 was surrounded by little cub scouts bike-riding an obstacle course, and he snoozed while they cruised.

The harness is super easy to adjust, which I have also found to be a problem on other models. Love the recline, it's a lever on the top of the seat! To change the direction of the seat, forward or reverse, just push in the two side buttons. No more reading a 10-page manual to figure out how to do it, yippee! And notice how high up it sits? Wonderful!

There are so many other nice little touches that makes the Vista an excellent choice for nearly everyone: Tall? It has a "no-kick" floating rear axle. Short? There's a height adjustable handle. Green? The bassinet is fully lined with organic soybean fiber and cotton.

Low maintenance? The tires are foam, not air, so no worries about pumping or flats. Shopper? One of the biggest baskets EVER! Mechanically challenged? Everything on the Vista is user-friendly, from the fold to the recline to the brakes to the seat reversal. Fair skinned? Pop-out sun shades on the main seat, rumble seat, AND bassinet!

Big kids? Check out my measurements below. Messy? Fabric is removable and machine washable. Tropics? Zip-in bug cover. Snow and rainy climate? Weather shade included. Limited storage space? Fold is compact, and can be done in one piece, if the seat is forward facing. It is smaller, however, if you pop the seat off.

Which of course is a breeze. Newborn? Bassinet included. 2 kids? Get the rumble seat. 3 kids? Get the PiggyBack.

So NOW you see why I am not exaggerating when I say the 2010 Uppa Baby Vista is practically perfect, and utterly deserving of my "5 Crown Royal Rating."

Halloween Buzz

Halloween is such a fun time to pick a stroller. Of course, as with all holidays, the colors have to be right. In the past, I have chosen an orange Quinny Zapp, an orange Phil & Ted's E3, a black Micralite Fast Fold, etc. This year I have a little baby, so I wanted a stroller that faced me. I also wanted one that could sail over any bumps or cracks with ease. It's dark, there's a lot going on, and I don't want to have to watch where I am going. So the perfect choice is the new gold and brown Quinny 4-wheel Buzz!    http://www.quinny.com/quinny/productdetail.aspx?id=64

When I tested it on the SQ Obstacle Course, the performance was stellar. The four wheels make it much more A/T than the prior 3-wheel version. More stable, too.  I really like it.

It's a good thing, because this year, we had a lot of chasing around to do.  Chasing a Star Wars Clone Trooper and Supergirl, that is. When it comes to kids and candy, speed is of the essence. It's kind of funny to see them running from door to door, as fast as they can, trying to hit as many houses as possible before everyone runs out of candy.

And this year, we all did. There were so many ghosts, goblins, princesses, clowns, Hannah Montanas and Barack Obamas out trick or treating this year. They started early, and they continued until late. For hours our sidewalks were packed. I mean shouder to shlouder, rush hour on the subway in NYC packed. The wide base did make it hard to weave through the crowd.  Although, as tight as it was, even my Shanghai Tang Mac Quest would have had problems. And it is the width that makes it so stable, so therein lies the trade-off.   I do wish it had a bigger basket. Though it wasn't something I needed on this night. You can get the optional "Buzz box" for more storage.

This stroller is extremely comfy. Look at the cozy footmuff, and the thick neoprene seat padding.

A wonderful thing about the 2009 Buzz is that it comes with an additional seat, a "toddler seat".  Not quite so plush, so there is more room for a bigger child's shoulders and hips. In addition, it comes with a raincover, and mosquito net. To complete the set, is the fabulous carrycot. SP 2.0 naps in this every day. It has the same soft, terrycloth-type lining as the footmuff. He loves to snuggle in to it. All in all, this is a great choice of a pram that can get you from newborn to toddler; even a pre-schooler.

Anyway, despite our best efforts, the Pumpkin, the Buzz, and I lost our Clone Trooper and Supergirl. Well not lost in a bad sense. The Clone Trooper ran into Commander Cody and Obi-Wan, and wanted to navigate the Halloween galaxy with them. And Supergirl stumbled across several classmates having a silly string war. So she was off to fly with them.

The Pumpkin, the Buzz and I attempted to do a few houses on our own. But that was mostly met with scorn. "He's too young for candy! That is really for you, isn't it! You are going to eat the candy!" Well, duh.

But all was not lost. My friend was playing "Twas' the Nightmare before Christmas" with a movie projector on a big screen. On her front lawn! We slowly strolled our way through the mob, past three haunted houses, down the hill and one block over. And there it was, Jack in the sleigh! The party had begun.

8. Zapp the Red White and Blue

It's Election Day! And of course, that requires a stroller that is patriotic. Not a problem! Take the new, cobalt blue Quinny Zapp. Add in an American flag, a red parasol, red Skip Hop, white and red Skip Hop wipes case (Swipe), white onesie on baby, and you're good to vote!

http://www.quinny.com/quinny/productdetail.aspx?id=29

It was a terrific choice.  The husband called in advance to find out where our polling place was. Turns out, it was just down the block, and around the corner. So we didn't need to walk far. A big A/T wasn't necessary. But perhaps a one-handed push would be important. There is no umbrella stroller that is easier to push one-handed than the Zapp, period. And it's small footprint and great style makes it a really fun stroller to use.It has no recline, so it is best suited to a child six months and older. And it will suit a much older child. Look at all the growing room that SP 2.0 has! The seat back is one of the tallest I have measured. But it folds really tiny. In fact, the Zapp bills itself as "The world's smallest folding stroller." This,  and the raincover and travel bag that comes with it, makes it ideal for travel. Many have reported stashing it in the airplane's overhead bin. They say the travel bag looks like any other carry-on.All the children were excited to go to the polling place. I say all, because in addition to my three, I generally have four or five others hanging about. But of course, this election generated a huge amount of interest. The whole brood  even voted in their schools. After they decorated their bikes and scooters, they started discussing who the winner would be. And who they voted for. Discussing, then arguing. I guess politics isn't even a safe topic among the 10 and under set! They got another interesting lesson when we got to the voting booths.  Despite the fact that they told the husband my name was on the list, it wasn't. Which meant I couldn't vote. The lady in charge said she would  let me vote provisionally, if I could show her a valid ID. I couldn't. Yes, believe it or not, I don't always leave the house with the thought in mind that I will have to prove I am who I am. This has gotten me in trouble more than once, as you will see in the upcoming chapter in "Adventures in Strollerland!" Anyway, it was good to have the Zapp to zip home to get the proof  I exist.

Chapter 9.

Turkey Switch

I've always been fascinated by fossils. One day, when I was a little girl, I was walking in the mountains. Something caught eye. It was a seashell, imbedded in rock. Upon closer inspection, there were more, including some imprints of odd looking sea creatures. I looked way down at the ground, and saw how high up I was. Then I looked over at the seashells. And I realized, with astonishment, that where I was standing, this high peak, was once submerged beneath the ocean. I was hooked.

So seeing the fossils is the REAL reason I get so excited about the county fair every year. OK, well, the horse races, too. And the concerts. Now I needed a stroller that was comfy for a long day, would face me, had a reasonable basket, great canopy, and would pack small enough for travel. Answer: the Pliko Switch. The Moka is a perfect color for fall. It also worked well  for the little turkey, when we traveled for Thanksgiving. The footsteps for an older child to ride, and the boot, are a bonus.
It stands alone when folded, and the canopy comes all the way down to the snack tray. The Switch has all the tried and true features you love on the P3, but now you can actually see your baby's face!
 http://www.pegperego.com/page.php?sid=06be4e7638c5dbfc7a9ecc50880342d7&pageid=UJVNL001&idf=04&idp=0000000175&cl=N

So while the kids were excited about seeing farm animals, raking hay, milking cows, and eating that horrific fried sugary and fried stuff that passed for food, I took SP 2.0 in the Switch, to see the old fossil guy. He lives in the mountains, and finds a lot of what he sells. He has a huge array of fossils, geodes, shark teeth, arrowheads, and more. As I surveyed this year's curiosities  with awe, he peered at me over his glasses. Didn't say a word. And I began, as usual, to ask too many questions about the treasures I was finding. He patiently answered them. Then turned to my husband, and pointed a gnarly finger at me. "This one here,
she always takes a LONG time to make up her mind" he said.

And we go back a long time. The first time I saw him, my girlfriend Kitty and I were going to the horse races. He was right outside the door. I was shocked to see that someone actually sold something that was 5-million years old. I wanted to stop and take a look, but Kitty grabbed my arm and dragged me inside. She was so excited. We were only in high school, but we had taken a long time to make our hair too big, our eyeliner too long, and our clothes too sophisticated for a fair.We were trying to "pass"as old enough to get in. It worked. As soon as we walked through the gate, we heard "Pss,pss, hey girls!" We looked around. Then again "Pss, pss, hey girls!" We still didn't see anything. Then, "GIRLS!" and we looked down, and saw a little bitty jockey. "Girls, let me give you a tip" he said. Bet all your money on that horse over there, number 16. " We looked at each other. "Girls, I have the inside track. I KNOW he will be the winner. Trust me! Bet all your money on horse number 16." We took out about half our money, fingering it longingly. "No, no, ALL of it! You'll get it back 10 times over!" he said. So we sighed, and handed over all our cash. And then the race was on, and it was over almost as soon as it began. Did the horse win?
HECK no! Not only did he lose, he came in last. Dead last. Dragging behind the pack. And we were broke. Not even enough to buy a coke. That's the last time I ever took a tip from a jockey. We were too mad to watch any more races, and left. On the way out, there was the jockey, on the side, laughing at us. We started chasing him, but our stilletos slowed us down. So he got away. Stepping outside, we blinked in the bright sun. And there, again, were the fossils. I couldn't buy any, but at least I could hold them. And  imagine what it was like in the prehistoric times in which these ugly trilobites lived.

Chapter 10. Santa Baby Toro

"Over the mountains and through the traffic to Godmother's house we go...the car knows the route, it carries the loot, no room for a stroller, uh oh!"

We have a wonderful time at my Godmother's Christmas Eve dinner. Lots of people, lots of decorations, lots of food, and lots and lots of presents. Santa Claus even shows up with a big bag, and distributes more toys to all the tiny tots with their eyes all a glow. So both coming and going, the car is packed to the gills. It's a typical travel dilemna, but compounded by wintery conditions. You need a really small folding stroller, yet one that is cozy enough, and rugged enough, to handle the snow. Micralite Toro to the rescue!  http://www.scichild.com/brand_micralite_stroller.cfm
The Toro stands alone when folded. It has three reclines, from fully flat to upright. The fold is fast and easy, and it comes with a matching boot. And how about this brilliant emerald green, perfect for Christmas!

The one-handed steering on the Toro is amazing. The visor is great for the sun. I wish the basket was a little bigger, though. And keep in mind that although the width on the back is very narrow, the front wheels are quite widely spaced. (See measurements below.) So you might have trouble negotiating it in narrow aisles.
But I was so glad to have it on our Christmas trip, especially for the way it handled the great outdoors.  We hadn't planned on encountering any snow, but an impromptu trip to the lake yielded this:

I'm pleased to say, the Toro handled it like a champ, and SP 2.0 enjoyed watching the kid's making snowballs and sledding.

Halloween Tike

Tike Tech City X3 Stroller Review

Look, up in the sky...It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's SUPER StrollerPrince, in his jack o' lantern orange Halloween Tike Tech!

The school party is just the beginning of the Halloween week-end. It will be followed by another party at night, trick or treating, Dia de los Muertes, and more..

So it's a good thing the City X3 has a lot of storage space, both in the large rear seat pocket, and in the basket.

The 20.5" seatback is taller than most, and SP, um, "Superbaby" has plenty of headroom under the canopy. The front napper bar makes a great footrest, and the ample canopy provides plenty of shade.

Of course, if you want, you can push it back. Which we will do tonight, since we will be out when the sun is down.

Now the big night is nigh. The night all the little ghouls, ghosts, and goblins await...OK, the night all the little Hannah Montanas, Michael Jacksons, and Barack Obamas look forward to...

I am so happy to be pushing the Tike Tech City X3 through these crowds. The seat sits up high.

And the push is as smooth as butter fingers, and just as delicious. The rear shocks on the 12" air tires make this a snickers sweet ride.
Yikes, it's a witch, and she's after my toes! Pull down the canopy, hurry!
.

The City X3 feels enclosed enough to make SP 2.0 feel safe, from other-worldly encounters.

It even has little mesh pockets inside, for a little guy to stash his rabbit's foot, or lucky penny, or just a sippy cup.
The thickly padded handle is height adjustable, and very comfortable. And if your candy hand is sticky, no worries. You can just push it with two fingertips, thanks to what the company calls the "IFD" (independent frame damping) and "QAT" (quick adjustable tracking. )
The 14" wide seat is comfy, if you want to take a break from gathering candy to watch "Nightmare before Christmas."
And it has a deep recline. So its a nice bed, if you are far from home, and need to sleep. And its a quick fold for the car. Just pull up the side safety catch, and two triggers under the handle.

Not only does it have the function, it also has the form. This is one good-looking stroller. And it costs less than most of it's kith and kin. No tricks here, just a treat. The Tike Tech CityX3 is royally deserving of my "5 Crown Royal Ranking."

Mountain Buggy March Madness!

March used to be a triple whammy month... St. Patrick's Day, the First Day of Spring (yes, we celebrate that one, too), and the StrollerPrince's birthday. Add another Strollerprince to the mix, and Friday the 13th in court, and yes, you have, MADNESS! What better way to celebrate all of this versatility than with MOUNTAIN BUGGIES!

These are top quality, rugged, durable, and made in New Zealand --not China --3-wheelers. Safety and strength are their hallmarks.

In less litigious NZ, salesmen used to demonstrate MB's by racing in them, yes, IN them.
When I was interviewed by Dave Price of the CBS Early Show, he asked me "Which of these will hold me?" Without missing a beat, I pointed to the MB. He climbed in, and I pushed him, whilst he pushed the Strollerprince, all the way to school. I did not break a sweat. I pushed them both one-handed. A full grown man and a toddler. Not a problem.

So this is the one to get, if you want: just one stroller that will last you from birth to Kindergarten, a stroller made in the West, the most stable 3-wheeler out there (the only one I couldn't easily tip over on the SQ Obstacle Course), or just something top quality, and user friendly. In recent years, Mountain Buggy has gone a little more upscale. There is the Elite line (I featured the double as my June "Pick of the Month.) Then there is the Designer Line, with wonderful prints like the "50's" that you see here.

And this year, they have introduced a brand new model, this cute little Swift.
For years, citizens of Strollerland have clamored for a "swivel wheel Breeze." The Breeze ( also featured on strollerqueen.com and yes, I do LOVE Mountain Buggies!) was the long-time little brother of the Terrain, (and no I don't have a review posted of that, but it WAS the first MB I owned) which are the fixed wheel cousins of the Urban. Fixed wheels are better for more rugged terrain, and are popular in Europe and other countries. But they haven't caught on as well in the US. So now, we can rejoice, in the new and improved "SWIFT!" It comes with a cupholder and removable back pouch. I would categorize the Swift as "mid-range", in line with the Toro, Bugaboo Bee, Peg Perego P3, or Inglesina Zippy. All of these weigh around 20 pounds, but the Swift will be the most rugged. Like the aforementioned (except for the Bee, unless you balance it precariously), it will stand alone folded. And the fold is easy, you just unlock the left latch, (this is a newly mandated safety feature) and pull up on the two side latches. That's it! The recline is infinite, done by loosening or tightening a back strap. The basket is a pretty good size, especially for such a compact 3-wheeler. The canopy has a viewing window and a roll-up flap. It is kind of open at the sides and back, for better air circulation. The sun canopy and storm cover are great optional accessories. Mountain Buggy also has a footmuff,

or you can get the very versatile Lillebaby Eurotote. Green for St. Patrick's Day, of course!

http://lillebaby.com/It can be used as a Moses basket, play blanket, and footmuff, among other uses. The length can be buttoned up for a smaller baby,or unbuttoned to fit even that aforementioned Kindergartener! You can even unzip the bottom flap for bigger feet/muddy shoes. The Eurotote has thick, cotton flannel padding. But if it gets too warm, you can unzip the top part, and zip in the net top. Ingenious!

The Swift has the same great rock-solid feeling as it's big sister, the Urban. But the smaller size makes it great for travel, especially if you are going somewhere with cobblestones or broken roads. Great to keep in mind for your upcoming summer adventures!

Valentine Matrix

This stroller is red,
so don't you be blue
the ride is so sweet
it's perfect for you!

Bowing to the realities of our slow economy, Valco has introduced a lower priced version of their popular TriMode. It's more than a hundred dollars less, but it is still pretty nice. Like it's more expensive sister, it can take an add-on toddler seat. Which means you can make a single into a double. It is also compatible with the new Husssh (compact and portable bassinette) bassinette, hitchhiker, footmuff, cupholder, snack tray, sun shade, and travel bag.

It only comes in two colors in the US--black and red. They are both true and vibrant. The Matrix (isn't that a cool name!) also has the infamous airgo fabric, and reflective harness.

There are two peekaboo windows, both on the back of the canopy, and the top.

The one on the back has a zippered pouch on top of it.

Even though the Matrix is "the bargain stroller", it still doesn't skimp on features. The handle is height adjustable, and the front wheel unlocks to swivel, or locks to stationary.

The tires are air, for smooth ride. I kinda' like the "whitewall look." Tire pump is included.

The recline is one-handed, easy and swift. Harness has the typical Valco buckle. LOVE the angle of the front napper bar. Perfect for a little cupid to hang on to. Hope I installed it right, lol!

The seat sits up pretty straight, too, so no straining forward.

My one complaint is the racheting sound the canopy makes when you retract it. I wish it was quieter. And I wish the canopy was more generous. I guess that's two??? Oh well, the larger canopy can be found on the Tri-mode, for a hundred dollars more (and a raincover, headhugger, more colors, saddlebags on the basket, different tires, a different brake system, and a third "tilt" position on the front wheel.)

Fold is also fast and easy. Just pull up the two side handles, then lift the red safety release. The fold is a reasonable size, and feels easier to lift than it's 26 pounds would suggest.

And the steering? I saved the best for last. It is AWESOME, wonderful! I pushed it one-handed along the entire SQ Obstacle Course, with no problems. Up and down grass banks, through mud, rocks, bricks, cobblestones, gravel, broken sidewalks...So no baby whiplash worries if you need to hold the hand of another little one, or the leash of a dog, or a latte', or a cell phone, or....

Happy Valentine's Day! Here's hoping cupid has a good aim, and hits the target of your affection!

Peg Perego Si' Review

Every time Easter rolls around, I look forward to choosing a stroller. Since I am usually travelling to visit family, it has to be a lightweight. One year there was the aqua Maclaren Daytripper. Another year it was the lavender Inglesina Espresso.
But this year, instead of going with a pastel, I chose the Easter-eggish "Corallo Stripes" Peg Perego Si'.

And you'll say YES! when you "see" it, too! If you are a Peg fan, you will adore it. To start with, it has an incredible canopy; remarkable for a lightweight umbrella stroller.
It pulls all the way down, and there is a dark mesh visor in the front.

There is also a mesh peekaboo window, with a little pocket on the back.

The recline is very deep, although not all the way flat. I would be comfortable using it at about 3 months and up.

There is a long, extended legrest which makes it very comfortable for a younger child. No "dangling legs" here!

The fold is very easy, just two steps. Pull up the lever, yank on the handle. And in case you forget, Peg was thoughtful enough to mark them for you--1 and 2, lol!

Good thing the fold is fast, too. We had five! different Easter Egg hunts to go to this year. In fact, they held the last one for us until 6:00, heehee!

The basket is very big, for an umbrella stroller. You can see how much stuff you can carry in there.
The handles are height adjustable. And there is a side carrying handle. It comes with a cupholder and raincover, and stands alone when

folded. Ideal for all your travel adventures!
But I saved the best for last. Notice something different/unusual/special about the Si'? Despite what we have discussed, I mean? Take another look:Give up? It's the WHEELS! And they are MAGNIFICO!

They are made of some kind of a wonderful hard rubber, with suspension and ball bearings. That is why, even though they are only 6.5", they can easily glide over all moderate outdoor surfaces, like cracked sidewalks and grass.
We agree that the Si' gets a Royal Rating of 5 Crowns!
